Rangers star Alfredo Morelos pulled off a surprise 2020/21 feat that no one saw coming.
The fiery striker made it through the entire season without picking up a red card.
Morelos made 44 appearances for the Gers across all competitions, playing more than 3000 minutes of football.
Yet, he wasn’t given his marching orders once, with ten yellow cards the extent of his in-game punishments.
Of course, there was the retrospective two-match ban for a clash with Dundee United’s Mark Connolly in December, but other than that, the Colombia international stayed clear of controversy for the entire campaign.
It’s not the first time that Morelos has avoided a red card for a full season since his move to Ibrox. In his first campaign as a Ger – 2017/18 – he picked up 12 bookings but wasn’t dismissed.
He caused plenty of frustration for Steven Gerrard and supporters alike in the two seasons in between, though, picking up seven reds and 24 yellows [Transfermarkt].
During that period, he was unfairly portrayed as a dirty player but there’s no denying that he was prone to petulance and regularly guilty of letting his frustrations get the better of him.
The majority of the fan base stood by him but his ill-discipline was a genuine concern at one point, so he deserves immense credit for turning things around this season.
El Bufalo wasn’t at his best in front of goal over the first half of the campaign but he stepped up after the turn of the year, delivering big goals at Pittodrie, Easter Road, Celtic Park and the Tony Macaroni Arena.
A summer recruitment drive ensured Gerrard wasn’t quite as reliant on his talisman as he had been in the past, but Morelos certainly did his bit and as one of the longest-serving members of the squad, he’ll be delighted to finally have a league winner’s medal to his name.
