Jake Hastie is facing a make-or-break pre-season at Rangers.

The winger joined the Gers in the summer of 2019 following an outstanding few months at Motherwell, signing a four-year contract.

However, since then, he’s managed just two appearances for the Light Blues, neither of which came in the league.

He was sent out on loan to Rotherham United during the 2019/20 campaign and back to Motherwell last season, but his returns were underwhelming at both clubs.

For the Millers, he scored three times and notched one assist before his stint was ended early and at Fir Park, he failed to score.

His attitude and commitment have been questioned at times [Daily Record] and it really looks as though it’s last chance saloon for him at Ibrox ahead of pre-season.

At 22, Hastie is no longer a youngster and he’ll know it’s time to start showing why the Gers offered him a bumper contract until 2023.

There’s no doubt that he has talent as well as pace to burn, but Rangers fans have barely got a glimpse of him in the famous jersey.

He’s one of a number of wingers returning to Ibrox from loan spells this summer, with Jordan Jones, Brandon Barker and Glenn Middleton amongst those who will also be looking to impress.

Therefore, if Hastie wants to avoid being put on the transfer list, he needs to stand out from the crowd from the get-go.

The exact make-up of the Gers’ pre-season is unconfirmed with their Algarve training camp in jeopardy after Portugal was removed from the green list [Scottish Sun].

Yet, strong performances in training – wherever it takes place – could lead to opportunities in friendlies against the likes of Arsenal, Partick Thistle and Brighton, and Hastie will have to shine to have any kind of chance of playing a part in Rangers’ title defence.

In other news, Rangers’ SLO has responded after being asked what the chances are of fans returning to Ibrox for the 2021/22 Premiership opener.
