Ben Godfrey was handed a start by Derek McInnes as Rangers took on Johor Darul Ta’zim in a pre-season friendly in Spain on Thursday.

The game ended 2-2, but the English defender did not come on for the second half and was spotted walking towards another pitch ahead of the second period.

Rangers News understands that a member of the coaching staff accompanied him, and he appeared to be walking gingerly.

Would you want Rangers to compete in the Europa League or the Conference League next season?

Money will be more in the Europa League, but the Conference League gives you a better chance of a European trophy…

Ben Godfrey did not pick up an injury as he went to warm up during the second half

While Ben Godfrey was taken off by Derek McInnes, that was merely to give other players a chance, and the centre-back is not injured, one source close to the team told Rangers News.

He had an individual training and warm-up session on another pitch, but nothing that should cause any worries for the fans.

Godfrey, a new signing at Ibrox, has impressed in pre-season, partnering Emmanuel Fernandez at the heart of defence.

Which formation should Derek McInnes use at Rangers?

Given the players he's got so far, there are a number of ways that the team can play…

An injury to him would have scuppered the plans of the duo to start the first game of the new season together.

While work is ongoing on another centre-back, it seems like Godfrey and Fernandez are McInnes’ go-to centre-back pairing.

Thus far, nothing suggests that he will not be available for the next pre-season friendly, which is against St Etienne.

Why Carlo Ancelotti admires Rangers’ loan signing

It is hard to believe, but there was a time Godfrey played under Carlo Ancelotti.

That undoubtedly would have been a great learning curve for the Englishman during the Italian’s days as Everton manager.

Ancelotti admitted that he did not know too much about Godfrey when he joined Everton, but was quickly impressed by his adaptability and ability to play in multiple roles.

What is your reaction to the new third kit?

It's fair to say a lot of Rangers fans have hated it…

He said back in 2021, via the Guardian: “Gareth [Southgate] doesn’t need advice from me, but to see and watch Ben Godfrey at this moment, in this period, is a pleasure for any manager.

“He has surprised me because I didn’t know him so well [when he signed]. He was a signing from the club, from our scouts, and he has been really good.

“He has been able to adapt very quickly to different positions.”

Under Ancelotti, Godfrey played as a right-back, left-back and centre-back, and his versatility could be why he was signed by the Light Blues as well.
