Glenn Middleton’s new contract looks all but set to be signed.

According to the Scottish Sun, the Scottish under-21 starlet has apparently agreed a new, long-term contract at Ibrox. His current deal expires at the end of the season, after initially penning an 18-month contract.

Middleton has shot himself into first-team reckoning at Ibrox this season. He’s made 11 appearances in total for the senior side this term, and bagged three goals.

There had been groans of discontent about the fact Middleton hadn’t been tied up yet. Given the fact that he has impressed so much this season, potential suitors would’ve became interested. The club seem to have been relaxed about the whole situation, and appear to have agreed fresh terms.

There’s yet to be an official announcement from the club, with the news being broken by the Sun today. Therefore, it remains to be seen how long the new contract is as well as both the player and manager’s reaction to the deal.

Nobody can deny the impact Middleton has played whenever he’s been subbed on or started this season. He’s already tasted experiences such as away days in European football as well as the Old Firm. His stock seems to rise every time he’s out on the pitch, and Gerrard has moved to tie him up by the looks of things.

More immediately, Rangers fans will be interested in finding out if Middleton is going to be used on Sunday in any capacity. Whilst it’s looking a tad likely to be Eros Grezda who starts up front against Aberdeen, Middleton could still be used in the match.

Gerrard doesn’t exactly have a plethora of options to choose from. Given the fact that Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty are both out, his options up top are minimal. If it isn’t Grezda, there’s going to have to be some chopping and changing around the striker’s position. That’s assuming, of course, that Umar Sadiq isn’t going to get his chance.

Middleton can operate on either flank, but you have to imagine both Ryan Kent and Daniel Candeias will start on Sunday.

In any case, it’s great for fans to see a young talent such as Middleton signed up. He’s going to be an absolute star at Ibrox, and he’s in the right place to find that potential.
