Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has admitted the club are on the hunt for a midfielder as the club look to add something to the “engine room” ahead of the new campaign.

Links to South African midfielder Bongani Zungu have gone cold, with conflicting reports claiming talks have stalled over either personal terms of a medical.

But with Rangers reportedly willing to splash out £3.8m on the South African international, should Rangers consider splashing out marginally less on a talented midfielder closer to home?

Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull was one of the most in-demand Scottish talents around only a year ago and was on the verge of a £3.25m move to rivals Celtic.

A medical with the Parkhead club flagged up an issue in the now 21-year-old’s knee and the deal collapsed.

Now back in the Motherwell team and back amongst the goals following surgery, a report in the Scottish Sun is claiming the midfielder is back on Celtic’s transfer wish-list.

But are Rangers missing a trick not trying to move for the player given how effective the midfielder can be in the final third?

It’s well publicised Rangers need more goals from the middle and Turnbull is a proven talent at this level with room to grow.

Turnbull hit 15 goals from midfield in 30 Scottish Premiership appearances in the 2018/19 season and under the management of Steven Gerrard can take his game to the next level.

We could certainly do worse and not only would a move for Turnbull secure Rangers one of the country’s brightest young talents, but it’d be a blow to our biggest rivals too.
