Rangers may well be put on high alert after talented Chelsea wonderkid Billy Gilmour was once again left out of the club’s squad for a Champions League clash.

The young Scottish midfielder is widely regarded as one of the best young talents around and had left a big impression on the Chelsea squad under former manager Frank Lampard.

A product of Rangers’ youth academy, Gilmour moved to Chelsea at 16 and made his first-team debut for the club three years later.

However, since the appointment of Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, Gilmour has toiled for opportunities in west London.

The midfielder has only played some 162 minutes for the club since the German took over – both in the FA Cup – and has found chances at a premium.

Gilmour, 19, hasn’t played a European match for Chelsea since playing the full 90 minutes in the 1-1 group stage draw against Krasnodar.

Gilmour’s absence from the Chelsea squad travelling to Seville to face Porto in the Champions League will have plenty of clubs taking notice with Gilmour hot property according to talkSPORT host Jim White.

Despite being denied a loan move in January, White has suggested Torino, Napoli, West Ham, and Leicester City are all interested in the player [talkSPORT 13/04/21].

But with Steven Davis aging – and Rangers looking for quality additions – perhaps a return to Ibrox, which at times feels inevitable, would be a positive solution for all parties.

Rangers were linked with a loan move for Gilmour at the tail end of 2020 [Scottish Sun] and if his current situation continues at Chelsea perhaps a similar move could be a prospect in the summer.

At Ibrox there is Steven Gerrard, a requirement to win, the chance to win trophies, and of course, the prospect of Champions League football, something he currently isn’t getting at Stamford Bridge.

Don’t just take our word for it though – one of the Ibrox club’s most legendary players says the prospect of signing Gilmour on loan is one which “intrigues” him.
