Rangers are set to miss out on reported loan target and Everton midfielder Kieran Dowell after Football Insider reported he was close to joining Sheffield United on loan.
The talented youngster is a highly rated English prospect and was linked to Rangers this week by the Scottish Sun after Ovie Ejaria left the club.
Still only 21, Dowell broke through into Everton first team in 2014. He has 11 England caps and is a top-rated prospect down south.

Rangers midfield situation has been made more challenging by Liverpool loanee Ejaria returning to Anfield. Ejaria was a key member of Rangers first team but complained of feeling unsettled in Glasgow.
Even with him in the team it was clear Rangers would have to invest in more creativity in midfield.
They had an eye on Dowell but now it looks like they’ll have to look elsewhere.
If the reports are true, Dowell has opted to join the Blades. That’s if there was even concrete interest from Rangers to begin with.

But does the reported collapse of this loan move open the door for ex-Rangers captain Steven Davis to come back to the club?
The 33 year old midfielder might not be as young as Dowell, but he could certainly prove to be the creative force Rangers lack.
Whatever happens, expect movement in this area for Rangers come January.
