Rangers are set for an overhaul on the field of play as well as behind the scenes under the leadership of Andrew Cavenagh.

The American owners are looking to streamline the way things operate at Ibrox in order to make the Light Blues a formidable outfit once again.

This season looks like it is over for Rangers, but they could scupper Celtic’s title chase by beating them in the Old Firm derby this weekend.

Who do you see replacing him?

James Fowler set to seal Rangers exit

According to Rangers Review journalist Chris Jack, James Fowler will be parting ways with the club to join Premier League club Newcastle.

Fowler became the Head of Academy Scouting and Recruitment back in February 2024, but will now be parting ways with the Light Blues.

It is understood that Rangers are keen on a replacement for him as they want to overhaul the current academy structure.

Currently, David McCallum is overseeing the academy setup, but there will be a permanent appointment in due course.

Former Rangers’ Director of Football Ross Wilson is also at Newcastle, and Fowler will work with him at St James’ Park.

Why Fowler will be a big miss for Rangers

Fowler achieved legendary status as a player at Kilmarnock, where he made over 400 appearances in all competitions.

He also managed Queen of the South and held caretaker positions at Sunderland and Kilmarnock.

That expertise translated into him being an essential figure behind the scenes, helping to make the operations smoother.

Even at Rangers, he first worked as a coach for the youth sides, perfectly understanding what it takes to be a budding player in the club’s academy.

He was then given a larger responsibility and fulfilled that role to the T as well, making him a difficult person to replace.

Cavenagh will leverage his contacts to hire the right people for key positions behind the scenes.

Thus far, a number of his appointments have been spot on, and it is essential that Fowler’s replacement is also the right fit.

Hopefully, work will have already begun on hiring the next academy chief and a confirmation could be made when things have been finalised.
