Rangers have been recognised by Glasgow City Council as part of the club’s 150th anniversary celebrations by way of a civic reception in the famous City Chambers.

Famous faces from the past and present of Rangers Football Club gathered in Glasgow City Centre to celebrate the contribution of the Ibrox side to the city and beyond over the last century and a half.

This included the likes of ex-Rangers chairman David Holmes, ex-chief executive Martin Bain, former director Campbell Ogilvie, and various other important faces of Rangers past and present.

The widow of Walter Smith, Ethel and the widow of Jock Wallace, Daphne, were also in attendance, whilst so was the likes of Giovanni van Bronckhorst, John Greig and even important SFA figures such as Mike Mulraney and Rod Petrie.

This was amongst a host of former players and celebrities attached to the club as Glasgow came together to celebrate the contribution of one of its greatest exports.

Rangers stand as one of Glasgow’s most prominent institutions and it is fitting that the civic reception was held at the famous City Chambers and hosted by the Council.

The Lord Provost of Glasgow, Jacqueline McLaren, also took to Twitter to recognise the contribution of Rangers and the club’s charitable programmes to the city.

Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson also delivered a special speech as part of the 150th civic reception at the City Chambers.

The news has of course upset plenty of our rivals as one of the nation’s most respected institutions are recognised as 150 years old by an official government body.

The online meltdown has been something of an added bonus to the entire affair but the focus, as always, is squarely on Rangers.

At the same time as the civic reception, there has been some news from the background of the club too.

The Gers have announced that George Taylor – who was part of the original consortium who wrestled back control of the club alongside Dave King – has been appointed to the Ibrox board.

The club made the announcement by way of a brief statement on their official website which you can read HERE.

Rangers continue to go from strength-to-strength even in their 150th year and the club’s recent successes both at home and abroad are a cause for celebration in Scottish football.

But don’t just take our word for it: Hibs chairman Ron Gordon claims Rangers’ recent European exploits have done more for Scottish football than anything else in recent memory.

Gordon believes “no club has contributed to advancing Scottish football on a European level or really in general than Rangers in the last three years” [Scotsman].

And to think, Scottish football almost ate itself alive trying to bury us a decade ago.

Meanwhile, a reportedly £4.5m-rated versatile international has issued a sign me up plea to Rangers.
