Rangers’ Scott Arfield must use Canada exclusion to catch breather

Rangers and Canada midfielder Scott Arfield was one of the stand-out performers of last season, but in this campaign, it feels like he’s never really got started.

Whilst there’s little doubting the Canadian captain’s effort – his assist against Midtjylland at Ibrox after running through a wall testament to that – he’s yet to reach the heights of last season.

After a summer playing at the Gold Cup, could having the next two weeks off help Arfield recapture his best form on the pitch?

As you can see above, Arfield hasn’t been selected for Canada’s upcoming double-header against Cuba.

Given he’s the country’s captain, and not injured, you suspect this is to give Scotty Arf the much-needed rest he clearly needs.

Whilst his effort has largely been faultless, he has struggled to impose himself on matches the way he was for large spells last season.

Despite scoring away to Kilmarnock and FC Midtjylland this season, it’s a low return given the form Arfield displayed in the latter stages of last season in a more advanced role.

Arfield – like the rest of the side – also struggled to impose themselves on Celtic in a confusing set-up at Ibrox at the weekend.

A breather feels like exactly what both the 30-year-old and Rangers needs.

Because Rangers need this experienced, talented head firing if we’re to win silverware this season.

But following the signing of Ryan Kent, is Arfield guaranteed a place in the side?
