Rangers’ Europa League rivals Bayer Leverkusen have issued an update on squad activity as uncertainty continues to surround the second-leg fixture between the two sides [Bayer04.de].
Leverkusen triumphed 3-1 at Ibrox last Thursday night, with the second meeting due to take place in Germany this evening.
However, since then, the Scottish Premiership, Bundesliga and all UEFA club competitions have been suspended in response to the global health pandemic.
Leverkusen trained at the weekend, before announcing via Twitter that the players were set to have a few days off and return to behind closed doors sessions on Wednesday.
However, no session took place and the club has now ‘cancelled communal training for all teams at Leverkusen until further notice’ [Bayer04.de].
It was a surprise that training took place at all over the weekend and more surprising still that sessions were planned for this week, despite the vast majority of football in Europe already being at a standstill.
A more cautious approach has now been taken, though, with players undertaking individual sessions from home for the foreseeable future.
The Bundesliga is postponed until 2 April, but after a Premier League announcement to extend the suspension of all professional football in England until the end of next month [Premierleague.com], a similar approach could soon be taken in Germany.
UEFA’s decision to move Euro 2020 back to the summer of 2021 has freed up space for rearranged fixtures, so at the present time, it’s still possible that the Gers could complete their tie against Leverkusen before the season is out.
