Rangers defender Connor Goldson is arguably the first name on the Ibrox teamsheet and this season more than any other he’s looked every inch the defensive marshal the Gers rely on.
A powerful and vocal presence on the Rangers backline, Goldson hasn’t always had it his own way with the Gers support and has often been found guilty of high-profile mistakes.
But this season he’s barely put a foot wrong – and it’s time Rangers signed him up to avoid losing the 27-year-old for nothing.
Connor Goldson signed for Rangers from Brighton for a reported £3.5m in June 2018 as Steven Gerrard took the reins at Ibrox.
Signed on a three-year deal, the big defender is now entering the final year of his contract and could potentially leave for free should Rangers not agree a new contract.
Whilst Rangers are well-stocked at the back – Filip Helander, Leon Balogun, Niko Katic and George Edmundson are a formidable selection of defenders – Goldson is by far the most influential.
In two seasons at the club Goldson played 106 matches, an incredible feat given the former Brighton man’s recovery from a heart operation.
Goldson has also played all five of Rangers Scottish Premiership matches this campaign, and you can bet he’ll be involved at the weekend against Hamilton.
The 6ft4 stopper may well be inclined to return down south at the end of his current deal and there promises to be no shortage of suitors for a player who is often underappreciated by the support.
But by signing him up on a contract extension Rangers can protect the asset and ensure that if Goldson does want to move on, he doesn’t do so for free.
