Rangers right to hit SPFL hard, latest shambles should have been avoided

You can always tell when Rangers are in the right when the SPFL or other clubs don’t put an argument to any issue that we might draw attention to.

Take the farce with Dundee’s pitch for example, we have been scathing in our assessment of the ongoing problem, and yet, there has been nothing in retort from both Dundee or the league’s governing body.

Yesterday afternoon, we found out that Dundee have to declare the pitch playable this morning or Rangers fans will be travelling to Perth instead and to McDiarmid Park, which begs the question – why couldn’t this decision have been made earlier?

Rangers right to target SPFL after Dundee pitch farce

We’ve all seen the staggering numbers showing just how many games Dundee have had cancelled in recent seasons.

There is one in particular that is relevant when you compare Dundee and Dundee Utd, famously situated on the same street.

Since Utd last had a game postponed due to rain, Dundee are well into double figures, Ibrox has lost one game due to safety reasons for fans.

That’s not climate change, as was suggested by Dundee’s secretary, that’s negligence.

Reviewing what Rangers said last week, it’s hard to disagree:

“Rangers expects the SPFL to take proportionate and decisive action in accordance with its rules, and the club will continue to make representations to them in the strongest possible manner.

“The club has been repeatedly putting forward solutions to the SPFL, which have not been taken up. It has again proposed a solution to the preparation and execution of this rescheduled fixture and is awaiting a response from the SPFL.

“As things stand, the rescheduled match will be on Wednesday, April 17 at 8pm. The club considers that this matter has been handled incorrectly throughout by both Dundee and the SPFL.”

SPFL has to do more to avoid similar situations again

Five times this season Dundee have had postponements, no wonder Gers boss Philippe Clement was frustrated with him and his squad being messed about.

After the second, the SPFL should have been more proactive and demanded that Dundee put in place provisions for alternative venues whenever there was the chance of other games being called off.

What has happened, is that the SPFL looks amateurish at best because the fixtures for the split can’t be announced until after this game.

Has anybody heard from the chief executive?

The administrator on nearly £400,000 per year to run the league in Scotland.

This has been going on for weeks now and not a peep.

How is that leadership?

With stronger and more competent governance, teams would be held to account and have to comply with regulations that are a lot stricter than they currently are.

Is this Neil Doncaster and Co’s fault?

No, but when amateur leagues have better contingency plans than the professional league in the country, you have to wonder what they are doing.
