Rangers require Premier League favour and Champions League miracle

If Liverpool can beat Ajax, and Rangers can miraculously earn a point or more against Napoli, then we could be set for quite the final day Champions League showdown.

What a turn up for the books it would be if Rangers can somehow stem the seemingly inevitable tide of them being the worst team in Champions League Group Stage history by qualifying for the Europa League.

At the minute the Gers are pointless with two games to go and will need four from the final six for this to happen, but unto it’s mathematically impossible there will still be some dreaming of a miracle.

And that’s what it will take if Rangers are to halt Napoli’s red hot start to the season which has seen the win 11 games on the bounce as they gear up to secure a record-breaking 12th.

Then they’ll need to beat Ajax at Ibrox.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is also a man under increasing pressure after overseeing some of the worst results in the club’s history in the same period and with Rangers fans falling out of love with the football being played at Ibrox.

But – whisper it quietly – stranger things have happened, just probably not in the world of football.

Rangers need Napoli miracle and Liverpool favour

If Rangers do manage to pull off the impossible in Naples this week not only would it represent a stay of execution for Van Bronckhorst, but it would present him with a chance to haul the club up by their bootstraps.

Rangers are a team devoid of confidence and as we amble our way to the World Cup break, being in touching distance in the Premiership and qualification for the Europa League might ease some of the pressure.

Especially considering Rangers have more wounded in their ranks than Britain did the first few days of the Somme.

But if Rangers are to do their job then they need a favour from Liverpool as they look to ensure Champions League football of their own post-Christmas.

Jurgen Klopp’s men head to Ajax fresh off the back of a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest as their woefully inconsistent start to the season continues.

The Reds are unpredictable – but potentially lethal as Rangers found out in the last round of fixtures – so as we head into a potentially decisive match day in Group A, rather remarkably, it’s still all to play for.

Meanwhile, Rangers have been fired a £70m warning ahead of the trip to face Napoli.
