Rangers reportedly tracked Souleyman Doumbia before Angers move

Rangers were reportedly interested in signing left-back Souleyman Doumbia before he made a loan move to Angers permanent, according to Goal.com.

Goal are claiming that Rangers and Lokomotiv Moscow were also interested in signing the Ivory Coast international, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Angers from Rennes.

Angers have since announced the player with L’Equipe claiming back in January that Angers had a €3m option to buy on Doumbia, 23, as part of the loan deal.

Whatever the case, Rangers opted to sign Leicester youngster Calvin Bassey, who will provide direct competition for the left-back slot to Borna Barisic.

Rangers are routinely mentioned as being interested in players across Europe but there’s nothing to suggest the Ibrox club made this interest concrete.

The singing of Bassey filled up the troublesome back-up left-back slot and done so at a fee considerably less than €3m.

Doumbia isn’t the only player coming out of France who’s been linked with a move to Ibrox this summer.

Austrian striker Adrian Grbic was linked to Rangers before his reported €7m move to Lorient from Ligue 2 Clermont.
