Rangers relief as Gerrard wins controversial player race amid Ibrox links

Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard looks set to raid Premier League rivals Everton to sign French left-back Lucas Digne for Aston Villa in what looks like good news for the Ibrox side.

The move comes after Digne and Everton boss Rafa Benitez has reportedly had a bust-up as the left-back hasn’t featured for the toffees since the loss to Liverpool at the beginning of December.

Benitez questioned the Frenchman’s mentality during the press conference before the FA Cup tie against Hull [EvertonTV].

“I’m a professional and I try to manage. Since my first day here, I know what the fans want. When you are not winning, it’s more difficult,” said Benitez.

“But the reality is we need players who want to be here, for any reason. Talking about individual stats when the team finished 10th? It means nothing to me.

“We need a winning mentality; we need ambition, and we need to do things in the right way. Everyone knows each other here really well.”

With Villa being in pole position to sign Digne [SkySports], this would surely rule out a move for Rangers defender Borna Barisic amid the recent links [ScottishSun].

Although the Croatian hasn’t replicated the form he showed last season as the club strolled to the league title, he still remains the first choice left-back.

With Giovanni van Bronckhorst beginning to make his mark on the side and already bringing in one new signing in James Sands, everyone has been given a fresh chance to shine.

Barisic is in the prime years of his career, and it is inevitable he will leave Ibrox in the near future, so let’s enjoy him while he is at the club.
