Rangers release strange Ross Wilson statement which should worry Nottingham Forest fans

Rangers announced late on Wednesday that Ross Wilson had left his Director of Football role at Ibrox to join Nottingham Forest.

The 39-year-old has been named Chief Football Officer at the City Ground after spending three-and-a-half years in Glasgow.

Rangers released a very flattering statement thanking Wilson for his efforts, highlighting his work in helping them wrestle back the Scottish Premiership title, overseeing two club-record sales and also transforming the training ground.

However, the strange statement was arguably misleading for Nottingham Forest fans.

Why Ross Wilson should worry Nottingham Forest fans

Well, Rangers interestingly failed to mention any of Wilson’s signings – despite stating that he has introduced a “fully operational player trading model” at Ibrox.

If it was fully operational, then surely Rangers could have found some examples of his recruitment aside from the sales of Calvin Bassey and Nathan Patterson?

To put it bluntly, incomings were probably glossed over by Rangers as there are very few success stories.

Wilson spent £3m on Rabbi Matondo during his time in Glasgow, a player who has failed to score in 21 appearances this season.

£2m was also paid for Juninho Bacuna, who scored just once in 12 games before joining Birmingham City.

Wilson then spent a £2.2m loan fee to bring Aaron Ramsey to Ibrox, a move which turned out to be a disaster as the Wales international missed a decisive penalty in the Europa League final and was mostly injured during his loan spell.

A £500,000 sum was also splashed on Mateusz Zukowski back in January 2022 – he made just one appearance before being shipped out on loan.

There have been few success stories for Wilson – arguably aside from the arrivals of Ianis Hagi, Bassey and Jermain Defoe.

Nottingham Forest fans have watched their side recklessly spend £140m on 30 new signings since winning promotion last summer, with only a handful of them, such as Morgan Gibbs-White, proving to be a hit.

Therefore, supporters at the City Ground should probably be a bit concerned about giving Wilson full reign.
