Rangers raise complaints over use of offensive term in tabloid headline

Rangers SLO Greg Marshall has claimed the club has raised a complaint with the tabloid newspaper the Sun after an offensive term appeared in one of their headlines this week.

The Scottish Sun used a play on words relating to comments made by Hamilton boss Brian Rice about the club’s winning mentality to put “HunGer” in the title.

Whilst they may claim this makes sense within the context of the story Rangers fans were left infuriated due to the fact the banned term – a derogatory word for people in Scotland based on their religion and political identity, usually attached to Rangers or Hearts fans – was included in the headline.

The suggestion is the Sun should know better, with some even hinting at foul play, but whilst there has been no official suggestion of this plenty of supporters have raised the issue with the club.

The headline looks bitter and offensive at worst and insensitive and ill-considered at best.

Marshall took to Twitter to reveal that the club has contacted the Sun regarding the issue and will update supporters in due course:

The story – available to view HERE – has since had the title changed to simply “hungry for success”.

It’s not the first time in recent weeks Rangers have had a falling out with the Scottish Sun and the club has taken a no-nonsense approach to vexatious reporting in recent years.

Press rights have been revoked and issues aplenty challenged as Rangers rail for fair treatment after years of journalists and rival fans getting away with bashing the name of the club and its supporters in the press.

The Scottish Sun was also forced to print an apology only last month after printing an inappropriate graphic of Rangers manager Steven Gerrard and captain James Tavernier in their newspaper.
