Attacker's first Rangers start since August on the cards vs Stirling Albion

When Rangers take on Stirling Albion in the Fourth Round of the Scottish Cup on Friday night, Cedric Itten could make his first start for the club since August.

The 25-year-old striker impressed in pre-season, scoring against both Real Madrid and Arsenal, before featuring in a number of competitive matches early in the campaign.

He started the Champions League Qualifier away at Malmo in early August and then came off the bench against Dundee United and Alashkert (twice).

However, a surprise loan switch to Greuther Furth went through on the final day of the summer transfer window, and Itten spent the next few months in Germany.

He was recently recalled to Ibrox on the request of Gio van Bronckhorst, though, and he could soon return to the Rangers starting lineup.

The Switzerland international came off the bench for the final few minutes of the Gers’ 1-1 draw with Aberdeen on Tuesday and is in line for a more prominent role against League Two outfit Stirling Albion.

GvB has already confirmed that he’ll take the opportunity to use players who have been short of playing time, and Itten is one who fits that bill.

With Alfredo Morelos soon set to jet off for Colombia duty and Jamaica likely to call up Kemar Roofe, Itten could soon temporarily be one of only two senior striker options at Ibrox alongside Fashion Sakala.

So it’s likely that both players will get plenty of minutes under their belt in this one to try to get them up to speed for bigger challenges that lie ahead, like the second Old Firm of the season on 2 February.

A gallery released by the club confirmed that Itten took part in training on Thursday, so he’s fit and should be raring to go.

Even though this game is against lower-league opposition, a start and a goal or two would boost his confidence considerably, given that even at Furth, he was short of starting opportunities and only found the net twice.

The towering forward has six goals and three assists from 43 Rangers appearances, but most of his outings have come from the bench.

Meanwhile, a £5m star Rangers missed out on produced a stunning display on his first start for his new club, rubbing salt into the wound.
