Reputable club insider account Four Lads Had a Dream has asserted that the announcement of contract extensions for Steven Gerrard and the wider management team, will be followed by new deals for several Rangers players.

Multiple outlets, including STV, reported on Friday evening that Gerrard had agreed a new contract until 2024 and that an official announcement was imminent.

In response, the account has claimed that the new deal was agreed last week and that it was the club’s intention to make it public after the weekend. Yet, despite the information being leaked, it’s asserted that an official announcement still isn’t expected until Monday.

It’s further ventured that new deals for multiple unnamed players will soon follow.

Verdict

It’s perhaps unsurprising that such high profile news was leaked.

Clearly, the board’s intention was to publicly reward Gerrard with a new deal regardless of the outcome of Sunday’s League Cup final, thus displaying their faith in his methods regardless of silverware.

It’s all out in the open now, though, and is dominating the headlines ahead of what could be a season-defining fixture.

It’s exciting to hear that new player deals are on the way, too. Last month, the Four Lads account claimed that Steven Davis, Allan McGregor and on-loan striker, Jermain Defoe would soon commit their future to the club.

If those are the players referred to again here, it would be a big boost.

In a squad vying for silverware, it’s important to have a scattering of quality, experienced operators. McGregor, Davis and Defoe certainly all fit into that bracket and all three have played important roles so far this season.
