Rangers official partners Hamburg kept their hopes of Bundesliga promotion alive by the skin of their teeth following a last gasp equaliser against Fortuna Düsseldorf in a 1-1 draw.

The home side had taken the lead through a Khaled Narey goal with only five minutes remaining in what was a massive blow to Hamburg.

Once a European heavyweight, Hamburg has fallen rapidly over the previous few years and hasn’t featured in the top flight since 2018 and this looks set to stretch to a further year.

Rangers and the German club have enjoyed a long-standing friendship that dates back to the 1970s with the two sides signing a co-operation agreement in February 2021 which made the friendship official.

Fans of both teams regularly travel and experience the atmospheres at both Ibrox and the Volksparkstadion every year. The two sides last met in 2011 when Hamburg was playing their trade in the Bundesliga and the Ibrox side mere months away from the devasting news of administration, with the German side winning 2-1.

It emerged last week that with the match between Hamburg and Aue being postponed due to a Covid outbreak in the HSV squad, the away fans would be able to use their match ticket and get a free stadium tour of the Volksparkstadion to make up for the match not going ahead.

It was a classy gesture and one that sums up the once European Champions. Hopefully, they can retain their Bundesliga rights soon as the longer the club goes without having top-flight football, the harder it’s going to be to get there.

In other news, Rangers’ recent Europa League progress could spark an April momentum boost as the matches come thick and fast.
