Rangers once held talks to sign Braga boss as manager

Braga manager Carlos Carvalhal has previously claimed that Rangers once tried to sign him up to take the reins of the Ibrox club.

The Portuguese coach is best known in Rangers circles for his time south of the border, where he enjoyed spells with Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City.

A former Braga centre-back, Carlos Carvalhal took over at in Portugal after Rangers had dumped the Portuguese side in the Europa League Last 32 two years ago.

Now, the manager – who has also worked extensively in Portugal and Turkey – will be hoping to exact some revenge when Rangers visit the Municipal Stadium on Thursday evening.

Things could’ve been so different for Rangers and Carlos Carvalhal if the Ibrox club had made reported interest in the manager concrete way back in 2015.

The manager claims he held talks to take over the Gers during their spell in the Championship and before Rangers appointed Englishman Mark Warburton.

This was also before Carvalhal’s first stint in the UK with Sheffield Wednesday.

“I came to London to talk with people from Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday,” said Carlos Carvalhal [TalkSPORT, 18/09/18].

“But Wednesday came faster (with their approach).

“I was very excited (about the prospect of managing Rangers). If I was there I am sure we could have done very good work. But they are in very good hands (with Gerrard).”

Mark Warburton would of course guide Rangers out of the Championship but after toiling in the Premiership was replaced by Portuguese manager Pedro Caixinha.

That was also and unmitigated disaster and Steven Gerrard eventually came into Ibrox and gave Rangers back their pride in Europe and domestically.

Rangers prepare to face Braga and Carlos Carvalhal in the Europa League quarter finals off the back of a woeful result in the Scottish Premiership.
