Rangers need another huge performance from Allan McGregor tonight

If Rangers qualification for the Europa League was to rest in anyone’s hands, there’s probably no pair better than the ever-reliable palms of Allan McGregor.

The Rangers goalie has been a revelation since rejoining the club in the Summer. Vocal, commanding, talented, the 36 year old Scotland number one is some goalie.

He’s probably also the main reason Rangers are in the Europa League in the first place. Stunning performances against Shkupi, Osijek, Ufa and Maribor saw us through.

And he’s probably the main reason we’re still in with a shout. His stops in the last game against Villarreal were peak McGregor. Gerrard clearly values his contribution.

It’s fair to say McGregor has been our most consistent player in Europe. He’s been consistently unbelievable. The big man is a real presence between the sticks and an inspiration to the rest of the team.

He’s also going to need to be the same tonight. As the clock ticks down to kick off, his importance is becoming clearer and clearer.

A talented shot-stopper with cat-like reflexes, he’s ability on the pitch is very important. But his experience, leadership and command is also vital.

The big man raises his game 10% on nights like this.

If Rangers make it out of the cold in Vienna with their hearts still beating, you can bet Allan McGregor will have had a hand in it. Or maybe even two.
