Out-of-contract Rangers midfielder Steven Davis was coy when asked about his future ahead of the club’s triumphant 55th league Championship.
The Northern Irish international captain might be 36 but for many bears Davo is the club’s player of the season as he shows a consistency, energy and ability of someone years his junior.
The beating heart of a Rangers team on the verge of history, Davis appeared quietly confident regarding his future with a contract set to expire come the end of the campaign.
But if there are any doubts about giving the ex-Southampton captain another deal they’ve been extinguished by the player’s performances this season.
The Gers would be mad not to move on Davis and offer him another year at Ibrox after he sent a loud and clear message that he’s not slowing down anytime soon.
“I don’t tend to look too far ahead,” said Davis [Rangers].
“Listen I feel good at the minute you can clearly see that I’m enjoying my football, how could you not with the season that we’ve had so far?
“So I don’t see myself finishing up at the end of the season.
“I think my approach has been the same as the club’s, trying to concentrate on the football first and foremost, and try to get ourselves into a position first.
“But I’ve got a very open relationship with both the gaffer and Ross [Wilson] at the club.
“We’re always talking about different scenarios so I’m not under any pressure or worried about the situation moving forward.”
The Gers will secure a first league championship in a decade in the coming weeks – perhaps even this weekend – offering Rangers the chance to make the Champions League next season.
Davis was in the Rangers side which last made the group stages in 2010/11 and the midfielder’s experience would be invaluable should the Gers make the tournament next season.
The Northern Irish international certainly has one eye on the competition and expressed his determination to play in it at least one more time.
“It’d be massive for everybody associated with the club and for players it’s no different,” said Davis.
“It’s a stage you want to play on and to get another taste of that at my age would be very nice.”
Davis isn’t the only player Rangers should offer a new deal to with a vital duo surely considering signing on at Ibrox with the Champions League looming large.
