Rangers must make big calls as contract uncertainty hangs over 9 players

Rangers are facing contract dilemmas as nine players can leave the club in the summer.

These are issues that need to be sorted sooner rather than later, as players can technically agree to join other clubs in January without Rangers receiving a penny.

With three goalkeepers out of contract, the question is, who do we keep? Andy Firth may want more first-team football so he might even reject an extension. With Allan Mcgregor approaching 40, retirement could be close.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

This leaves us with Jon McLaughlin, who is a steady and reliable keeper when he is called upon. I would be happy with a combination of McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie next season. That mix of youth and experience could work well.

The rumbling issue of whether or not Connor Goldson will sign a new contract is intensifying after every sub-par display. The defender hasn’t quite looked himself recently amid reports of mixed messages [Daily Record].

Own goal at Brondby aside, Leon Balogun has been impressive recently, partnering with Goldson ever since Helander’s injury. He could well warrant an extension if his form continues.

Midfield dilemmas

The club face a major decision on whether or not both Steven Davis and Scott Arfield’s contracts are extended for a further season.

Davis has been one of our most influential signings since re-joining the club in 2019. However, age is catching up with him and he can’t carry on forever.

If his contract does get extended, expect a reduced role for the Northern Irishman.

Arfield hasn’t played as much as he would have liked this season. However, his performance against Motherwell at the weekend proved that when he starts, he can still be a menace.

He still has plenty to offer in terms of first-team football, with his determination and movement two qualities we have sorely missed.

In terms of attacking options, only two are out of contract.

Both Brandon Barker and Jermain Defoe have been used sparingly over the past 18 months. I’d like to see Defoe remain as part of the coaching staff.

Barker is one who hasn’t offered an awful lot during his time at the club. A January departure potentially? We’ll have to wait and see.

In other news, Rangers’ fans might be able to breathe a sigh of relief with a major development imminent at a Premier League club.
