Rangers must keep eyes on the prize and ensure Celtic empire finally falls

Whilst many might not admit it, Rangers fans everywhere will have been disappointed in the aftermath of the Celtic Scottish Cup victory – from last season’s tournament – to secure a quadruple treble.

It was the latest victory in a long line of them at Celtic which we’ve had to watch on wincingly as they chip away at our world record trophy haul with 12 on the bounce – three every year since we’ve been back in the top tier.

It’s been excruciating at times but Rangers must use this as inspiration to ensure that this is the last hurrah for an empire in decline in Glasgow’s eastend.

Whilst Rangers fans may dispute many of the trophies won during Celtic’s reign at the top of the Scottish game, their clean sweep of trophies since we got back into the top tier is not without merit.

I say this begrudgingly, but since 2016 Rangers have stood as the only team truly equipped to stop them and have fallen at every single hurdle.

The resultant fallout from the midweek League Cup exit was a direct consequence of this, Rangers fans losing themselves a bit when the main prize this season is and always has been 55.

Once again – many uttered – Rangers had fallen short at the first hurdle and the first sign of pressure as a trophy which was within our grasp slipped painfully from sight in Paisley.

It gave our rivals more cause for celebration in the wake of their Scottish Cup victory, the notion that Rangers cannot repeat the feat of a treble this season emboldening their cause.

But as the Gers showed real character to come back from behind and edge out a 3-1 victory over stubborn Motherwell at Ibrox we quietly stretched our lead to 16 in the Scottish Premiership.

If we’re to be successful this season, Rangers must continue to keep their eyes on the prize to ensure the eastend empire falls and we’re celebrating winning a much bigger prize in May.

Rangers showed real character to beat Motherwell over the weekend with the heroes of the hour proving that a £6m investment in the summer has been a major one for the club.
