When Rangers splashed out a fee which could reportedly rise to £7.5m on Ryan Kent, it raised plenty of eyebrows in Scotland.
This represented Rangers’ biggest single outlay since the signing of Mikel Arteta in 2002 and given the club’s previous financial situation it was considered a risky move.
After Kent’s PFA Scotland Young Player of the Season campaign in 18/19, the player also failed to live up to the hype and the price tag.
Fast forward a season however and the tricky former Liverpool winger is looking every inch the precocious talent which the Ibrox club recognise him as.
There’s an added directness to Kent’s game which is exemplified by an increasing rate of numbers at the attacking end of the pitch.
The winger’s two goals already this season is a quarter of his eight from the whole of last season and there’s a directness and ambition in his play.
Kent has been arguably our key man this season.
So whilst Rangers splashed out a hefty price tag to bring the 23-year-old to Ibrox from Liverpool, Steven Gerrard is bang on when he tells Leeds United to go back to the drawing board if they’re serious about bidding for the player [Clyde SSB].
Alongside Alfredo Morelos and Borna Barisic, Ryan Kent is Rangers’ prime asset and is a vital part of the team.
More than that he is young English talent who is destined for the Premier League and who is clearly not without interest down south.
Given the market for young English players – and Kent’s emergence as a vital player in Steven Gerrard’s side – Rangers cannot accept any less than £20m for this talented young star.
Should Kent continue to impress at Rangers, that £7.5m could go on to prove a snip if the Ibrox club are to sell the player on for English millions in the coming seasons.
