A Daily Record report claims Rangers midfielder Steven Davis could soon be set for a new contract at Rangers.
The outlet published what was billed as a summary of the contract situations of all the members of the Gers squad, now that the transfer window has officially closed.
It’s just a matter of stating expiration dates for most players, but in Davis’ case, a little more is hinted at.
The report claims “it’s likely he’ll be offered the opportunity to stay for another year or two.”
Is a new deal likely for Steven Davis?
At 34, Davis is no spring chicken. He’s had to adapt his playing style over the last year or two, usually sticking to a deeper-lying midfield role that’s less taxing on the legs.
However, despite a rocky start to his loan return to Ibrox due to a lack of match fitness, he impressed sufficiently to earn a permanent switch from Southampton via a one-year contract.
He was only awarded that deal in May, so now, just four months on, and just a few days after the end of the summer window, it seems unlikely that the club already have a new one lined up. If that were the case, they would have been just as well giving him a two-year contract at the start of the summer.
If he is to prolong his Ibrox stay, he has to earn it through his performances and prove there’s still plenty of games left in his legs. Against Celtic on Sunday, he often showed the right intent, but his passing radar was off.
It must be said that that was a very rare bad day at the office. He might not have the same burst of pace he used to, but in general, he’s been extremely reliable and at his best, he dictates the pace of entire games.
The hunger is still there, too. The fact that he’s still playing for and captaining Northern Ireland after passing 100 caps shows just that. Euro 2020 falls after the expiration of his current Ibrox deal, but if the Green and White Army qualify, he’s sure to be there leading by example.
In short, it would be a major surprise if the club opened new contract negotiations with Davis before January. Yet, despite his age, he’s a fantastic player and if given the option, Gerrard is likely to want to keep hold of him for at least a further season.
