Transfer talks to see Rangers player Greg Docherty leave Ibrox are “getting closer” with “a real serious club” in for the midfielder, according to boss Steven Gerrard.
The Ibrox manager was speaking to the press as he previewed the Scottish Cup visit of League Two Stranraer.
Speaking openly about Docherty’s position in this transfer window, Gerrard suggested an announcement on the midfielder’s future could be made any time now.
“I think Greg had a real strong loan at Shrewsbury,” he said.
“This is a player we respect really much due to his effort but unfortunately it hasn’t happened this season and the best thing for his career is to go and play.
“There is a real serious club in for Docherty. Negotiations are ongoing. That is getting closer and closer and I predict something could happen in the next couple of days.
“Hopefully he gets out in the next couple of days so he can start to play some football.
“Sometimes these negotiations take longer than you would like but in an ideal scenario I would like to see him start playing regular football in the coming days rather than in the coming weeks.”
Numerous clubs have been linked with a move for the talented former Hamilton youth with earlier comments from Peterborough chairman Barry Fry suggesting the player was holding out for a move to a Championship side [Peterborough Today].
But only one Championship club are being named in the race for Docherty’s signature with Charlton Athletic and League One Sunderland the two clubs reportedly interested [STV] in the midfielder.
The question will now turn to whether or not the deal will be a loan move or a permanent one, with reports suggesting Docherty still feels he has a future at the club [Andy Newport].
