Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has given an update to the injury status of Nigerian international defender Leon Balogun after he went off with a head knock in the 3-2 defeat to St. Mirren.

In the closing stages of the match, Ibrox defender Balogun traipsed off the St. Mirren Park pitch after a clash with Buddies striker Jonathon Obika.

Whilst Balogun appeared to shirk the physical challenge for the ball, Obika lead with his arm and damaged the defender to the point he had to come off the field of play.

Rangers boss Gerrard claims the defender is a bit “dizzy” but said he hopes can pull through for the match against Motherwell this weekend.

“He’s a bit dizzy. So we will analyse him over the next couple of days and take advice from the medical staff,” said Gerrard [Glasgow Times].

“Hopefully he can pull through. If not, we have Fil available again.”

With Helander only just returning to the squad after testing positive for Covid-19 this would be a boost for Rangers ahead of the visit of Motherwell as they look to bounce back from this disappointment.

The Gers were defeated 3-2 by St. Mirren in a lacklustre showing which has seen them crash out of the Betfred Cup at the quarter-final stage.

With Celtic and Aberdeen already out of the tournament, Rangers were clear favourites for the competition but failed to clear this hurdle in Paisley.

Rangers fans were left furious after the defeat which means Steven Gerrard has now failed to delivery silverware in seven attempts at Ibrox.
