According to a BBC Scotland report, all Scottish Premiership teams want to complete the current season but many currently feel that is unlikely, with both Rangers and Celtic requesting a date by which a final call must be made.

Aberdeen hosted a virtual meeting on Friday afternoon attended by all current top-flight clubs as well as recently crowned Championship winners, Dundee United.

It’s reported that a ‘general consensus’ was reached on a willingness to complete the current campaign and that the SPFL are now awaiting clarity from both the government and UEFA before making their move.

The topic of behind closed doors matches was discussed, but five clubs claimed player contract issues ensured they would struggle to field teams.

The concept of league reconstruction was also discussed during the meeting with clubs debating multiple issues.

The BBC Scotland report alleges that some clubs raised concerns about rushing into changes, while seven sides voiced that they felt any alterations made would need to be permanent.

It’s been made clear that once finalised, multiple proposals will be put to all clubs to consider.

Verdict

After weeks of going around in circles, it seems as though progress may finally be being made.

Rangers have consistently pushed for the completion of the campaign and it’s encouraging to see that the rest of the clubs are broadly aligned with them in that regard.

However, it seems that, unlike in England, many sides still need convincing that a restart is actually possible.

There’s no need to rush into a call in the next few days, but the idea of setting a date by which a decision needs to be made is a sensible one.

As for reconstruction, there are clearly multiple options still on the table with a sizeable portion of clubs apparently happy with changes of some degree, as long as they are long-term alterations.
