Rangers’ move for Bongani Zungu is reportedly getting closer as the club make a “concrete offer” and Steven Gerrard makes a plea to the Ibrox board to sign more quality.

According to an exclusive with the Fourth Official (T4O), South African international Zungu “wants a move to Rangers” with a source at Amiens revealing the Ibrox club have made an official bid.

This comes after the Scotsman and Joe Crann reported earlier in the month that Rangers were closing in on a £3.8m deal for the 27-year-old midfielder.

However, the T4O report claims that whilst the Gers have made their interest concrete – and that Zungu will be leaving Amiens – the two sides remain locked in negotiations over a price.

“Negotiations between the two clubs are still in progress. It’s not just Rangers though. However, yes, there is a concrete offer on the table from Rangers,” explains the T4O source.

”The problem is they are offering a fee which has too many variable aspects. The upfront fee is lesser than what we want unfortunately.

“Negotiations are going on strong. Our price is set, and they know what we want. As of this moment, we have not accepted an offer for Zungu.”

According to the report, Amiens are believed to value Zungu at €4.5m (£4.1m) but the player himself is said to be “mentally at Rangers already”.

Another source close to T4O said:

”He is mentally at Rangers already. He feels excited about joining up with Gerrard. He is not going to be forcing a move away as he is hopeful that an agreement will be struck soon.”

These claims come after Rangers boss Steven Gerrard made a plea to the Ibrox board, claiming the club needs more quality if they’re to compete this season.

“We need more,” said Gerrard [Evening Express].

“I have told the club that, I’ve been honest and open with what I feel we need.

“In terms of where we are at from a financial point of view, they are questions for other people – but I have made it quite clear that we need to add to what we’ve got.

“We need to add players into the 11 to make us stronger and then, naturally, that will make the squad stronger.

“At the moment, we still need to get people in the door.”

A range of midfielders have been routinely linked to Ibrox with Bongani Zungu amongst the most prominent.

According to T4O, negotiations continue with the player willing to make the switch from Ligue 1 to Scotland but issues remain over the price and structure of the deal.
