Rangers loanee Ben Williamson was sent off for Raith Rovers on Saturday as late drama marred their clash against Inverness in Kirkcaldy as their promotion hopes took a massive hit with a 3-2 defeat.

Raith opened the scoring through Aidan Connolly before Caley Thistle equalised, although the Kirkcaldy side roared back into the lead three minutes later through Matej Poplatnik.

This was as good as it got for Raith as Kyle Benedictus was sent off with 20 minutes to go. Inverness then hit them with a double salvo as Logan Chalmers netted twice in three minutes to secure a much-needed win.

Williamson received his second yellow in the last minute and was sent off which just put the icing on the cake for Raith and summed up their recent form.

Williamson joined Raith on loan for the rest of the season in January, with manager John McGlynn claiming it was a “major coup” in securing the services of the midfielder.

The 20-year-old had spent the opening few months of the season on loan at divisional rivals Livingston, but found opportunities limited, making just seven appearances overall.

The chance to move to the Championship represented an opportunity to feature more regularly and he is getting more action, despite Raith’s worrying form of late.

This move will surely be beneficial in the long run as he will be aiming to be breaking into the first-team squad in the next year or so and with the success of Alex Lowry and Charlie McCann in getting some minutes recently, the onus is on him to keep working hard.

Hopefully, he comes back to the Ibrox side as a better player and can give Gio something to think about ahead of next season.

Meanwhile, three key talking points emerge from a crucial league win over Dundee.
