Rangers loanee Josh McPake missed a decisive penalty for Morton in the League Cup on Wednesday night, as St Mirren walked away from the tie with a bonus point.

A number of Gers loanees have been in midweek action for their adopted sides as the competition’s group stages come to a conclusion.

James Maxwell continued his strong form with a goal in a win for Queen of the South on Tuesday night, but Kai Kennedy missed Inverness Caley Thistle’s final penalty in a shootout against Raith Rovers.

Unfortunately for McPake, he also failed from the spot as Morton’s chances of progression to the Last 16 were dealt a blow.

The 19-year-old attacker was named on the bench in Paisley but with the game in the balance at 1-1, he was introduced in the 75th minute by David Hopkin.

He was heavily involved in the final third in the closing stages as the visitors pressed for a winner, firing just past the post seconds after coming on and seeing a deflected shot go over the bar.

In the end, the sides couldn’t be separated over the 90 minutes, though, and a shootout followed with a bonus point up for grabs.

There were two former Rangers keepers in goal and both Aidan McAdams (Morton) and Jak Alnwick (St Mirren) saved the first spot-kicks they faced.

11 successful penalties followed before McPake was called upon to keep his team in the contest.

Yet, the Scotland U21 international was denied by Alnwick, as the Buddies walked away with the extra point.

Morton are now third in Group G on five points and will need to defeat Partick Thistle at Firhill on Saturday to have a chance of progressing to the knockout stages.
