Rangers loanee Ben Williamson made his first start for adopted side Raith Rovers against Dunfermline in a drab Fife derby after signing for the Kirkcaldy side on New Year’s Day.

The match finished 0-0 in what was a result that kept Raith just four points behind league leaders Arbroath and firmly in the promotion hunt.

Williamson featured alongside fellow new signing Sam Stanton in midfield as both sides were aiming to register a win to start the year off well. The Rangers youngster was solid during his 68 minutes on the pitch before being substituted. The Pars had arguably the best two chances in the match but couldn’t convert.

With other derbies originally scheduled not taking place until early February, the focus was on the big one from Fife and it was something of a let-down.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

The signing of Williamson could boost Raith’s promotion hopes as he was a standout for Arbroath in the Championship last season, playing 18 matches and scoring once during an impressive loan spell.

Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work out for him at Livingston for the first half of this season, the step up to the Premiership perhaps coming too soon for the young midfielder.

The 20-year-old is highly rated at Rangers and signed a new two-year deal in the summer. Spending the second half of the season on loan will certainly aid his development.

John McGlynn certainly knows how to get the best out of loan players and Williamson will prove to be no exception. It could be the perfect stage for the youngster as Raith is aiming to win promotion to the top flight for the first time in over 25 years.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be keeping an eye on his progress during the next six months, that’s for sure.

In other news, Williamson was nominated for the Scotland Goal of the Year Award but narrowly missed out to a Motherwell youngster.
