One-time Rangers-linked Newcastle winger and out-of-contract Premier League star Jacob Murphy showed exactly why the Gers are linked to his services with a goal over the weekend.

The versatile Murphy, 26, has been employed as a right wing-back throughout the season with the traditional winger once again employed here as Steve Bruce’s side travelled to Burnley.

Scoring his second Premier League goal of the season, Murphy equalised for Newcastle in the second half at Turf Moor after Matej Vydra – another player linked to Rangers in January 2020 – had Sean Dyche’s side ahead.

Murphy curled it home from just inside the Burnley box after the ball was turned back from Allan Saint Maximin in a very tidy finish past Martin Dúbravka.

French winger Allan Saint Maximin would then secure all three points for Newcastle with a fine low driven shot after twisting and turning past the Burnley defence.

The result leaves Newcastle United in 17th in the Premier League and could prove a vital win as the season begins to bottleneck.

The Gers were linked to Murphy last summer as Steven Gerrard looked to bolster his squad ahead of what eventually proved to be a legendary season [Daily Record].

However, after a successful loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday in the English Championship last season, and improved performances in training, the Magpies opted to retain the player’s services.

Despite heading into the last year of a four-year deal – signed when Newcastle purchased Murphy from Norwich for £12m in 2017 [BBC Sport] – Newcastle wanted to run the rule over the player this season.

As a result, should Rangers remain interested in the winger’s services then they will face stiff competition from Newcastle United.

Toon Army boss Bruce has already gone on the record to claim that he “would love to see” Murphy sign a new deal at the club [The Mag].

Speaking of Premier League clubs, one Ibrox star has reportedly been the subject of enquiries from a quarter of the divisions teams this season.
