Rangers linked Norwich City midfielder Kenny McLean returned to Championship action on Wednesday night in a boost for a potential January swoop.
The Scottish Sun reported last month that McLean is a winter transfer target for the Gers.
It was asserted that Rangers would try to bring the Scotland international to Ibrox either on loan with an obligation to buy or on a permanent deal with the fee paid in a series of instalments.
Yet, any potential move looked to be off just days later, when the midfielder picked up a knee injury that Canaries boss Daniel Farke believed might require surgery.
At that stage, the 28-year-old was looking at four to five months on the sidelines [Scottish Sun].
However, last week, Farke confirmed that surgery hadn’t been required [Canaries.co.uk] and McLean made his comeback on Wednesday night.
He came on for the final seven minutes to help his side see out a 2-1 Championship win over Nottingham Forest at Carrow Road.
It was a remarkably quick recovery from McLean and given that he has several weeks to work up to full match fitness prior to the transfer window, it looks highly unlikely that injury will prevent him from securing a move next month, should his intention be to leave East Anglia.
McLean is under contract at Norwich until 2023 but was playing something of a bit-part role prior to his injury, only starting four of his side’s opening 12 league matches.
The Rutherglen-born player grew up a Rangers fan, so he’s likely to be at least interested should the Gers come knocking, but Steven Gerrard already has a number of options in central midfield and may look to prioritise strengthening other areas of his squad.
One such area could be the forward line, with these supporters excited amid links to a South American striker.
