‘I’m not exaggerating’ – £2m Rangers linked star compared to Man Utd hero

Rangers legend Barry Ferguson has likened Lawrence Shankland’s style of play to a former Manchester United striker.

The Hearts star has been linked with a transfer to the Ibrox giants for a good while now, with many pundits and fans calling for the move. That talk has intensified in recent weeks given Shankland’s return to form for Hearts as the 28-year-old picked up November’s Scottish Premiership Player of the Month award.

Shankland has notched up six goal contributions in his last seven games and it’s little wonder why Ferguson is a big fan. The former Ibrox skipper took in Shankland against Rangers in midweek against Hearts and despite the Scotland man drawing a blank, he put in a good performance against a club he could well sign for soon.

And Ferguson now thinks Shankland is ‘ready-made’ for a switch to Ibrox and went as far as comparing Shankland to a young Teddy Sheringham, formerly of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur among other top Premier League sides.

Ferguson wrote in his Daily Record column: “The truth is, I watched the performance at Tynecastle on Wednesday night and I saw two players on that pitch who might be better options when it comes to filling the main striker’s role in Clement’s team. And only one of them was wearing a blue shirt.

“Let’s start with Lawrence Shankland who catches my eye every time I see him play for Hearts. This guy has improved his game to such an extent over the last couple of years that I’m surprised he’s not been snapped up already but, watching him on Wednesday, I saw a ready made Rangers centre forward.

“I’m not exaggerating when I say his overall game reminds me of a young Teddy Sheringham. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying he’s at Sheringham’s level. But he does have similar attributes in terms of game intelligence and that natural ability to drop into dangerous areas and link up with his team mates.

“So I was very interested at the end of the game to see Clement giving him a big cuddle out there on the pitch and I can’t help but wonder if the Belgian might be thinking what I’m thinking where Shankland is concerned.”
