Rangers-linked defender Danilho Doekhi was sent off in a five-goal Europa Conference League thriller on Thursday.

In the early stages of the summer transfer window, both Football Insider and the Telegraph credited the Gers with interest in the towering Vitesse centre-back.

A hamstring injury played a part in his failure to seal a summer move, but as he’s now in the final year of his deal, he’ll be available on a pre-contract in January.

Doekhi has been captaining Vitesse in the Eredivisie and in Europe so far this season with mixed success.

They have won three of their last four domestic league matches and sit fifth in the table, while they are third in their four-team Conference League group.

Doekhi and co. defeated Spurs 1-0 at home a fortnight ago but they lost a thrilling encounter 3-2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday evening.

In new manager Antonio Conte’s first match in charge, the hosts raced out of the blocks and were 3-0 up inside half an hour.

The visitors didn’t throw the towel in, though, and got themselves back into the game before the break with goals from Jacob Rasmussen and Matus Bero.

When Cristian Romero was sent off for the hosts around the hour mark, a remarkable comeback looked likely.

However, things unravelled in the closing stages, with Doekhi one of two Vitesse players to be sent off.

After picking up a booking in the 76th minute, he was shown a second yellow card just four minutes later for hauling down Harry Kane in the centre-circle.

The Vitesse skipper will now miss their next European fixture away at Rennes.

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard has dropped a major Rangers selection hint for Sunday’s Premiership fixture against Ross County.
