Once Rangers linked Rhian Brewster is enduring a nightmare start at Sheffield United following his transfer from Liverpool.
Back in June, the Scottish Sun reported that Steven Gerrard was looking to bring Brewster to Ibrox on loan for the 2020/21 season.
However, despite his strong form in pre-season, Liverpool opted to sell the England youth international, and Rangers stood no chance against a host of Premier League clubs.
Sheffield United eventually won the race with their club-record offer of £23.5m [The Guardian] and Brewster signed a five-year deal at Bramall Lane.
However, he hasn’t made anything like the impact Blades fans would have hoped for.
The 20-year-old has only started three of his nine Premier League appearances to date and is yet to score or register an assist, with United in the midst of a woeful run of form.
Chris Wilder’s side have earned just one point from their 13 league matches so far this season, ensuring that they have made the worst start to a campaign in the history of top-flight English football.
Brewster’s struggles just go to show that spending big isn’t always the answer in the final third.
After their initial interest in the former Liverpool forward, Rangers brought in Kemar Roofe (£3.5m) and Cedric Itten (£2.7m), spending around a quarter of what Sheffield United paid for Brewster, and the two arrivals have contributed to an outstanding start to the season.
Roofe and Itten have produced their best performances in the Europa League, but both players will be hoping to help get their side back on track in a Premiership clash against Motherwell on Saturday afternoon, following their midweek League Cup exit at St Mirren.
