Rangers linked Peterborough striker Ivan Toney has signed for English Championship Brentford on a five-year deal after impressing in League One.

The former Newcastle United striker hit 24 goals in the English third tier last season and has been subject from reported interest from across the UK as a result.

Rivals Celtic are known to have had a bid rejected, whilst Rangers were heavily linked with the player as early as the start of August.

But after a drawn out summer of negotiations Toney, 24, will now join up with the Bees as they look to build on their appearance in the Championship play-off final.

“I’d like to welcome Ivan to the club. We are adding a hungry, ambitious, hard-working striker to the group here,” said Brentford FC Head Coach, Thomas Frank [Brentford].

He fits what I want in a striker; he is a goalscorer, he gets into good positions in the box, he is good playing on the last line, and will contribute to our link-up play.

“Our strikers are a big part of our pressing game, and Ivan, with his work ethic, will help us with that.

“I have been impressed with his mentality and attitude; he fits our brief of being confident but humble. He really wants to come to this Club and help us achieve our aims going forward.”

Sky Sports claim the deal starts off with an initial £5m fee but it could rise to £10m with add-ons.

Reports have also suggested that Newcastle United had a 30% sell-on fee clause in the player’s contract meaning they could also bank over £3m from the sale of Toney.

Rangers have opted to move for Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe in the transfer window, with the strike duo reportedly costing a combined £6m.

Rangers have also been linked with a move for Israeli striker Shon Weissman but reports over the weekend claim the Wolfsberger forward is set for a move to Real Valladolid [Balague].

The Ibrox side may well enter the market for another striker should anyone meet the asking price of Colombian firebrand Alfredo Morelos.
