Rangers legend’s Gerrard comments suggest Ibrox boss going nowhere

After Steven Gerrard signed a new contract at Rangers, we’ve heard plenty of talk within Scottish football fandom of insurance policies, financial security and inevitabilities concerning the Ibrox boss’ future.

For some, the contract signature is simply Rangers securing an asset and Gerrard’s departure to some mid-table English Premier League team is inevitable.

For others, the Ibrox boss won’t be able to see out his contract after Celtic romp to an inevitable 456th title in a row.

But in comments made by Ibrox legend Paul Gascoigne, he appears to break the hearts of our rivals by suggesting Stevie G is at Rangers for the long haul.

“I asked him what it was like when he got the call and he said ‘it’s so exciting’. He’s in it for the long haul, and why not?,” Gascoigne said [BBC Sport].

“He’s a good manager and obviously he’s got the respect of the players.”

This insistence that Steven Gerrard is going to be tempted from the prestige of his role at Ibrox for some soulless shot at the merry-go-round of mid-table obscurity in England is as desperate as it is bonkers.

First, there was Derby, then there was Newcastle United. Depending on how things go this season it’ll be every single job that becomes available in the Premier League down south.

Liverpool, and potentially England aside (a long way-away I know), Gascoigne’s comments reiterate Gerrard’s own.

He’s going nowhere. Glasgow is now a second home to the Liverpool legend and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
