Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has heaped praise on ex-teammate Allan McGregor and still thinks the goalkeeper has more football left in him if he chooses to stay at the Ibrox side for another season.
Although a mainstay in the team that won the league title last season, the 40-year-old has made some uncharacteristic mistakes this campaign which has led many to think it may have been a season too far.

Ferguson played alongside McGregor in both of his spells at Rangers and also in the same Scotland team, with the pair famously involved in the ‘boozegate’ incident in April 2009. With his time at Ibrox looking likely to end either this year or next, Ferguson believes the fan favourite still has more to give.
“After those mistakes, you saw what type of character he is,” said Ferguson [GoRadio].
“You saw the performance he had against Celtic because it could have been six or seven without Allan McGregor.
“He had a back problem three or four years ago; I know that’s the reason he stopped playing international football.
“I’d like to see him stay. He’s old enough to make his own mind up but I still think there’s football left in Allan McGregor.”
High praise from Ferguson and although there have been a few more mistakes this season compared to the last few, there is still something he can offer the club.
Rangers have had some fantastic goalkeepers in recent years, Chris Woods, Andy Goram, and Stefan Klos were all excellent in different eras, but McGregor edges it for me, simply due to longevity.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst has a big decision to make, and with backup keeper Jon McLaughlin extending his contract until 2024, then this season might be McGregor’s last hurrah.
Meanwhile, Alfredo Morelos is walking a suspension tightrope ahead of the Hibs clash on Wednesday evening.
