A former Rangers player has taken up a backroom role at English Championship club Blackburn Rovers.

The Ewood Park outfit are in dire relegation danger as they currently sit in 22nd place on the table.

With four months of football still remaining, they are doing whatever it takes to avoid playing League One football next season.

Blackburn Rovers announce Steven Davis’ arrival

Blackburn Rovers announced on Friday that former Rangers midfielder Steven Davis has moved to Ewood Park.

Along with the 41-year-old, Phil Jones, who won the Premier League title with Manchester United, will also be joining the Lancashire outfit.

The duo will be serving as first-team coaches to Michael O’Neill, who has been newly appointed as the manager of Blackburn.

O’Neill took over the reins at the club from Valerien Ismael, who was sacked on 2 February.

Damien Johnson will also be part of the setup with Davis, as he is set to continue his role as first-team technical coach and head of player development.

Why Steven Davis is a modern-day Rangers legend

Davis is regarded as a modern-day Rangers legend, given his extraordinary loyalty to the Govan outfit and pivotal contributions across two distinct eras.

He made over 300 appearances in total for the club and won several major honours, bringing immense joy to the Ibrox faithful.

Joining on loan initially in January 2008, he completed his permanent transfer for £3million and quickly became a first-team regular.

He won three consecutive Scottish Premiership titles from 2008-2011, multiple Scottish Cups and League Cups and also played a key role in guiding the team to the UEFA Cup final in 2008.

Davis then returned to Ibrox in 2019 under Steven Gerrard’s stewardship and helped end Celtic’s dominance by lifting the league title in the 2020/21 season.

He played multiple positions for the club and was the unsung hero for them, making the tough times not seem all that bad.

Fans will be delighted that he has entered coaching, and if he does improve and become a manager one day, he could be on the Ibrox hot seat, not as a caretaker, but on a permanent basis.
