Rangers legend Barry Ferguson has gone on a remarkable signing spree at Alloa Athletic as he prepares for a charge at the SPFL League One title.

Ferguson joined the Wasps last month shortly after guiding Kelty Hearts to the SPFL via a Lowland League win and play-off victories over Brora Rangers and Brechin City.

The 43-year-old said it was time for a new challenge and he’s got it at Indodrill, with the Wasps aiming to bounce straight back to the Championship following their relegation last season.

Ferguson began in late May by tieing down several key players to new deals and snapping up free agents.

Activity then appeared to cease, but it became clear on Tuesday that plenty of negotiations had been taking place in the background.

That’s because a whopping six signings were confirmed across the day, with Conor Sammon, Daniel Church, Mark Durnan, Steven Boyd, Ben Armour and Mark Lamont all joining the club [Alloa Athletic Twitter].

The signing of Sammon in particular is a statement of intent, given his experience at international and Premiership level, as well as in the EFL.

Ferguson clearly felt an overhaul of the squad was required and he’s now well on the way to being ready for the 2021/22 campaign.

Alloa are the third club he’s been a full-time manager at, following previous stints at Kelty and Clyde, and he’ll be hoping that a successful stint at Indodrill will put him in the running for higher-profile jobs in the future.

In other news, Rangers have been dealt a possible blow in their alleged pursuit of a player who grew up ‘five minutes’ from Ibrox.
