The likeable pundit replaces the likes of Matt Le Tissier and ex-Celtic star Charlie Nicholas, who were binned by the broadcaster in the summer.

For many fans, the sight of the former Scotland striker McCoist is a welcome change from the likes of Nicholas, Le Tissier and Phil Thompson as they took to Twitter to praise McCoist’s appearance on the popular Saturday afternoon football results show.

McCoist remains an immensely popular man around British football and the former striker’s appearance on Gillette Soccer Saturday was applauded by fans.

McCoist, 58, makes an appearance on Gillette Soccer Saturday after providing co-commentary with Clive Tyldesley in Rangers’ 2-1 defeat of Galatasaray on RangersTV during the week.

Rangers’ all-time greatest goalscorer formed part of a legendary panel of Ibrox royalty for the coverage of the Europa League playoff.

Meanwhile, Soccer Saturday host Jeff Stelling described Nicholas, Le Tissier and Phil Thompson being let go from the show as one of his “saddest days ever”.

“One of my saddest days ever at Sky Sports with the departure of three of my best mates,” writes Stelling.

“They have been part of a team that for me was the best.”
