Legendary former Rangers striker Ally McCoist has given his backing to under-fire Alfredo Morelos amid a poor run of form, despite fan complaints Super Ally is too harsh on the forward.
McCoist was on commentary duties for the match between Dundee United and Rangers which the Gers won 2-1.
But the match was overshadowed by an incident involving Morelos and Arabs defender Mark Connolly and a spate of missed chances in a frustrating performance for the Colombian.
Bluenoses had rounded on Ally on Twitter for comments about Morelos with plenty feeling that the legendary Gers forward can be too harsh on the club’s talismanic goal-scorer.
McCoist had previously branded the moment with Connolly as “crazy” and railed against the striker for giving Steven Gerrard “a problem” [Daily Record].
But McCoist himself has backed Morelos to turn his form around and recapture the goalscoring form which saw Morelos eclipse the club’s greatest ever goal-scorer as Rangers’ top European scorer.
“I don’t think Rangers are as reliant on him as they once were,” said McCoist [Glasgow Times].
“They were probably a little too reliant on Morelos’s goals, because he was going through a period there when he was excellent.
“There was a period where I wouldn’t say he was bailing Rangers out, but he was certainly their main goal threat, and he was delivering great performances and goals. He deserved a pat on the back for that.
“His form’s dipped a little bit, I don’t think there’s any denying that. But I think he deserves to be cut a little bit of slack because of his previous goalscoring exploits.
“He’ll correctly get a level of criticism at his door because he’s not doing the same now. Whether Steven thinks taking him out the team now he has strong options is the correct thing to do, time will tell.
“Morelos is too good a goalscorer not to come back into that vein of form. He’s just going through a period that all strikers go through where he’s arriving too late, he’s arriving too early, he’s miscuing things.
“He’ll be suffering, but he’ll come through it. He’s not in the same form as he once was but I don’t have any doubt it will come back.”
Under-fire Morelos is on a run of three Scottish Premiership goals in twelve Scottish Premiership games and cuts an unhappy figure on and off the pitch at times amid a sticky run of form.
