It was a surprise for many to see Rangers’ Kyle Lafferty leading the line on Saturday. Yet, the manager clearly had an eye on a busy upcoming schedule with his team selection.

A variety of issues have kept the 31-year-old on the peripheries of late, but with the in-form Alfredos Morelos rested, he was given a chance.

In drawing a blank, he failed to take that opportunity.

There are reports that Rangers will sign fellow striker Dominic Solanke, in January, and Lafferty is surely feeling the pressure.

His best opportunity came just before the interval. Good work from Scott Arfield gave him a sight at goal, but his effort could only ruffle the side-netting.

Substituted for Morelos just after the hour mark, his day ended prematurely. The Colombian then went on to score his side’s second and effectively seal the three points.

The Northern Irishman has now failed to find the net in his last five SPL outings and is unlikely to start again for a while.

With big matches against Villarreal, Hearts and Aberdeen to come, Gerrard will surely field his strongest team. That likely means no place for Lafferty and a return for Morelos.
