Earlier this summer, it was reported that Serie A side Spezia were lining up a loan move [Croatian Football News] before a subsequent report asserted that the 6ft 4″ defender had no intention of going anywhere [Glasgow Live].

Katic made a comeback from a long-term injury in pre-season and while he hasn’t been used since the competitive action started back, he turned out for the B team in the Challenge Cup in midweek.

On Saturday night, the Scottish Sun reported that the Gers had told Katic to find a new club and the article prompted a furious reaction from some fans.

However, Edgar has now provided an update via the Heart & Hand Twitter account that may be easier for Bears to swallow.

He asserts that the club are looking for Katic to head out of Ibrox, but only on loan, in order to receive regular playing time following his injury.

Given Heart & Hand’s status as an official club media partner this season, this information is almost certainly coming directly from Rangers.

And if a loan exit is indeed being sought, it’s an understandable approach.

Katic is a very powerful and talented young defender, whose pride at wearing the shirt has been clear since he signed from Slaven Belupo in 2018.

However, with Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, Leon Balogun and Jack Simpson also in the first-team squad, significant playing time is unlikely and following his serious injury, it would be better for him to get a lot of minutes under his belt elsewhere before coming back to Ibrox next summer with a view to genuinely challenging for a spot.

One exciting Rangers talent currently out on loan in the EFL received a standing ovation following an all-action debut performance on Saturday.
