Rangers injuries could scupper reported January loan plans for Ibrox pair

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard revealed that five first-team players were carrying injuries as he looked ahead to Sunday’s match with Aberdeen.

Prominent first-teamers Kemar Roofe, Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield are all set to miss the next few matches due to injury in a worrying blow for the Ibrox side ahead of a tough fixture run-in.

But could the news concerning two fringe players in the squad scupper reported transfer plans the club had this January?

Rangers pair Jordan Jones and George Edmundson have scarcely been seen ever since they were handed a seven-game ban for breaching Covid-19 protocols back in November.

Despite Steven Gerrard seemingly handing the pair a reprieve with comments about them coming back into the squad, reports have since claimed the Gers are open to loaning the pair in January.

The Daily Record claimed that Gers boss Gerrard was considering farming the two players out with neither featuring since they became available for selection against Hibs on Boxing Day.

But Steven Gerrard would explain that both players are carrying knocks as he looked ahead to Aberdeen.

“Jordan Jones has a calf issue and should be back next week,” said Gerrard [Rangers].

“George Edmundson is off to see a specialist as he has an issue with his hip area. Katic is also progressing well each week.”

The comments also come after Gerrard backed up the suggestion some of the club’s fringe players could head out on loan this month.

“I expect a few people to go out, there’s a lot of interest in our younger players and our fringe players in terms of loans,” said Gerrard.

“I expect quite a few loan deals to be done from now until the end of the window in terms of outgoings.”

It’s not clear if Jones and Edmundson fall into this category but certainly, George Edmundson appears to have sustained an injury that will keep him out in the medium term meaning a move is unlikely for the ex-Oldham man.

Jones is scheduled to return next week but it’s not clear if he remains a part of Gerrard’s plans this season.

Whilst the Rangers boss admitted there may be deals sending fringe players out on loan, the Gers boss was to the point when asked about the future of his key players.
